Going back to basics to make your own bread gives a sense of pride in the achievement and connects us with all who went before us so indulge your creative side and let your inner baker emerge !
Making our bread from the bread mix produces a tasty healthy bread but it is possible to tweak it to your own tastes and make a bread that is specific to you , your own signature soda bread.
IDEAS TO PERSONALISE YOUR BREAD MIX
- Try soya milk for a dairy free alternative or beat 3 eggs with cold water to make up 400ml for wheat bread, 450ml for spelt bread.
- If you don’t have any buttermilk use 400ml / 450ml fresh milk and add 1tsp lemon juice. Leave for 5 mins – then add to bread mix.
- If you like a sweeter bread, add 1 level dessertspoon sugar/honey/sweetener at step 3.
- For a slightly softer and slightly richer bread, add 2 dessertspoon of oil or melted butter at step 4.
- For a richer loaf you can add 1 egg to your buttermilk
to make up the 400ml / 450ml liquid total.
Feel free to add a fistful of optional added interest ingredients
at Step 3 to add variety e.g. sunflower/pumpkin/poppy/sesame or linseeds
Or try some raisins/ walnuts or apricots.
Or maybe even some chopped sundried tomatoes/ olives etc.
You will only be limited by your own enthusiasm so happy soda bread making.
