Rhubarb: You either love it or hate it. Just thinking about it makes you pucker up. Yet , its pucker power is exactly what makes rhubarb the world’s favourite pie plant. ! So – where did rhubarb get its name .? Thanks to the Romans, the word "rhubarb" takes its name from the Latin rha barbarum. Rhubarb grew along the banks of the river Rha, the ancient name of the Volga. Back then, the region was considered foreign, or barbarian territory. Thus, rhubarb literally means "from the barbarian, Rha."
The use of the word "rhubarb" dates back to the early days of Shakespearean theatre, a use that carried forward to present day. Dictionaries first define rhubarb as the lovable, edible plant that it is. Then the slang definition follows. To prepare you, let's get the feeling behind it. Say RHU-barb with attitude. Now you can see how the word became synonymous with a heated argument or squabble.!!

Mince pies. At Christmas time our mince pies are very popular. We make our own mince filling and add all our favourite things to it including copious amounts of brandy and other alcohol. No measuring here – I can tell you !! So when we take that rich fruit filling and wrap around it a sweet crumbly pastry.. - I wish it could be Christmas everyday……!

Just fresh from the trees. 2007 saw us plant a couple of acres of Native Variety Apple Trees in conjunction with Irish Seedsavers . In a few short years we will be making apple pies with glorious organic apples from magical varieties such as ‘Mother of Household’ , ‘Lady Sudley’ , ‘Cavan Rose’ and ‘Cavan Strawberry’ to name a few….I can’t wait! With no eggs or egg wash in either the apple or rhubarb pies/crumbles and the use of our 100% vegetable margarine make these products suitable for vegans.
