Galway’s Gluten-Free Toasts Awarded Highest Taste Honour Featured

Family-run Irish company The Foods of Athenry has once again been celebrated in this year’s Great Taste Awards, announced on 28th July 2016.

The Foods of Athenry’s range of gluten-free sodabread toasts were all awarded stars in the 2016 Great Taste Awards, bringing the company to over 50 taste accolades for its all-natural and additive-free products.

The products awarded are:

·        3 stars - Cumin and Multiseed Gourmet Sodabread Toasts

·        2 stars – Multiseed Gourmet Sodabread Toasts

·        1 star – Cranberry and Hazelnut Gourmet Sodabread Toasts

·        1 star – Honeyed Almond and Rosemary Gourmet Sodabread Toasts

·        1 star – Very Fruity Mince Pies

Based in the rolling fields of Athenry, the company has been at the forefront of gluten-free products in Ireland in the past decade. With multiple celebrity fans including Ellie Goulding, John Cleese and Roz Purcell, they offer gluten free food that does not skimp on taste.

The Great Taste Awards, first established in 1994, are considered one of the highest honours for food products internationally, and are decided by a panel of industry judges in a blind taste test.

These awards followed fast on the heels of the company’s record seven wins at Ireland’s very first Free From Food Awards announced in May of this year. The awards couldn’t be better timed for the Foods of Athenry, coinciding with the emotional five-year anniversary of a fire at the family farm which burnt the bakery to the ground and halted business for months. Company owner Siobhan Lawless said,

“We’ve come a long way in the last five years since the fire that burnt us out. More than 50 taste awards later I feel so blessed to have our products continually acknowledged as being some of the best in the world. And this year to be awarded the ultimate honour of a 3* Great Taste Award for a gluten-free product is a huge thumbs up for ourselves and the gluten-free community.”

This year producers from across the UK and Ireland entered 10,000 products into the Great Taste Awards with only 141 foods achieving the highest and most coveted rating, three stars. The esteemed awards had 878 foods achieving 2 stars and 2520 were awarded a 1 star, making only 35% of entries accredited at all.

What the Great Taste Awards judges said about us:

Multiseed with Cumin Sodabread Toasts: “The crunch is excellent and the cumin is very well judged. Overall a delightful cracker.”

Multiseed Sodabread Toasts: “Excellent crunch, rich in seeds, full-flavoured, a very versatile cracker.”

Cranberry & Hazelnut Sodabread Toasts: “It is evident that good quality ingredients have been used.”

Honeyed Almond & Rosemary Sodabread Toasts: “The rosemary teases and the almonds are muted but very good.”

Gluten Free Mince Pies: “We applaud the care and generosity that has gone into making these, deeply filled exceptionally fruit generous pies.”
